While Pep Guardiola had moved to sign a host of attacking players and a centre-back and a goalkeeper, the area conspicuous by the lack of any transfer activity was the full back area which was touted for a makeover. Guardiola expects his full backs to join in the team’s play and contribute heavily in attacking areas.
He has utilised them at his previous clubs almost as wingers and also converted most of them into midfielders. They need to be comfortable on the ball, be good passers and most importantly need to work the hardest in the team.
With a heavy workload including attack and increasing the numbers in midfield along with the job of tracking back in the event of expected counters, there was a thought that with Kolarov, Clichy, Zabaleta and Sagna on the wrong side of 30, there will be additions.
But Pep decided to persist with them for this season after spending big in other areas of the pitch. But he has been dealt a blow after the news of Hector Bellerin signing a new contract with Arsenal. There were strong rumours of Bellerin being next on Pep’s shopping list and this comes as a blow.
We take a look at 3 alternatives Pep can look to in light of this news.
SERGE AURIER– PSG
The 23-year old is considered one of Europe’s most exciting right-back. The Ivorian is a fine athlete and is known more for his attacking exploits. His domineering performance against Arsenal has made him an even more known face in England.
He has been likened to Dani Alves for his contributions higher up the pitch but he also possesses enough defensive attributes and his willingness to run, along with his physique helps him out in that respect.
But the player has a record of being a trouble-maker and needs to be reigned in. However, Pep will back himself to bring the best out of a promising player.
