It has been a tough period for Manchester United winger Memphis Depay since he moved to England from the Netherlands for a fee of £25m in 2015 on a four-year contract. The winger turned heads in his homeland with his stunning form 2014/15 season scoring 22 times and assisting 5 for PSV Eindhoven.
The scouts from the Manchester club were floored by him thanks to his apparent skill and ability which led to them even compiling a report which had him rated higher than a certain Cristiano Ronaldo at the same age. When United sealed the deal for the transfer of the player, everybody thought that the Premier League club instantly regained their edge by signing the player who can create the buzz at Old Trafford much like what Cristiano Ronaldo did. After almost a year and a half, that thought looks to be really ridiculous, to be honest.
Since his move to Manchester, the winger has made 33 appearances in the League with just 16 starts scoring just 2 goals without a single assist. His performances were below par and Depay never looked like a player with a bright future. In fact, his own countryman Van Gaal, who brought him to Manchester United, lost faith in him, eventually getting frustrated with his gameplay.
The only time he looked to be decent was when he played in the European competitions. Of late, Everton have registered an interest in the player who seems to have fallen out of favour completely at his current club having played for only 71 minutes in all competitions this season without a single start. A move to Everton will be thus a great opportunity for Depay to turn his career around.
Everton are now managed by another Dutchman in Ronald Koeman, who is fully aware of the qualities his target possesses. Koeman, when asked about the player, told Fox Sports Netherlands, ‘I would like to have him I think he is an interesting player. He has great individual qualities. He just needs to play games.’
The Toffees aren’t the only club to be interested in Depay, however. Everton and Ronald Koeman would definitely be the most attractive proposition nevertheless with the chance of proving his critics wrong in the Premier League.
Under Koeman, Depay can develop into a more matured player getting the mistakes out of the system, allowing him to contribute more to the team. At the moment a loan move looks to be most likely in January with an option of a permanent move, later on, seems to be the offer the Merseyside club would submit for the player.
