Manchester United are tracking Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez. The Uruguayan defender is very highly rated amongst the defenders but has a release clause of £56m.
After spending £30m on Eric Bailly Jose Mourinho is not satisfied with United’s defensive performances and is in search for a good defender in the winter transfer window. Also, Eric Bailly is out for a prolonged period and the Portuguese seem to be not very impressive with the performance of Chris Smalling and Daley Blind.
Gimenez was regular in Diego Simeone’s starting lineup last season but Stefan Savic has been preferred ahead of him as Gimenez has made only one appearance in this season. Arsenal was heavily linked with the teenage defender but then went on to sign Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia.
Should Gimenez arrive he could form a partnership with Eric Bailly in the heart of Manchester United defence. He has only 18 months left on his current contract but a deal in January is unlikely to happen.
