As they say, age is just a number. If you are really good enough for the job, it does not matter how old or young you are and the same thing goes in football. This season, we have seen some young players making a name for themselves at the biggest stage when their team needed them. In this article, we take a look at the three youngest goalscorers this campaign in the Premier League.
Demarai Gray (for Leicester City against Manchester United)- 20 Years 02 Months 27 Days
Leicester City won the title defying all odds last season but have struggled badly so far this season. On match day six, the Foxes travelled to Old Trafford to take on Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. Even though they are the Premier League holders, Ranieri’s side were the underdogs against the new-look Manchester United.
The game ended 4-1 in favour of the Red Devils. An early 4-goal blitz from the Red Devils killed the game killed the game in the first half itself with Smalling, Mata, Rashford and Pogba getting their names on the scoresheet. Leicester City could come up with just one consolation goal in the second half and youngster Demarai Gray scored it after replacing Jamie Vardy. And it was a pretty spectacular one as well!
Kelechi Iheanacho (for Manchester City against Manchester United) – 19 Years 11 Months 07 Days
It was the first Manchester Derby of this season and further spice was added to the fixture by the long-standing rivalry between the managers Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola. For a long time, Mourinho had failed to find the formula how to beat Pep Guardiola consistently and this fixture was no exception.
Sergio Aguero was missing the game with an injury which is why the Citizens were on the back foot but youngster Kelechi Iheanacho stepped up when his team needed him the most. Manchester City won the game 2-1 and it was Iheanacho who scored the second goal of the game to give Guardiola’s side a 2-0 lead.
Marcus Rashford (for Manchester United against Hull City) – 18 Years 09 Months 27 Days
Again Manchester United involved but this time it is their own player who scored the goal. Marcus Rashford became the youngest goalscorer this season and it was a crucial goal for his side. On matchday three, Manchester United travelled all the way to KC stadium to take on newly-promoted Hull City and could not find their way past the Tigers’ defence until the 92nd minute. Rashford came on from the bench in the 71st minute and scored the all-important winner in the 92nd minute.
