What a season Liverpool are having this time out! Jürgen Klopp recently had his one year anniversary as the manager of the iconic club and has completely transformed the Reds to an attacking force, and more importantly, the fans from ‘doubters to believers’. With no European football and such eye-catching free-scoring football, Liverpool do have a serious chance of going all the way to clinching the title by the end of the season. They are right now top of the table with 26 points from 11 games already scoring 30 goals which is highly impressive.
Club football will once again resume next weekend but let us now take a look at Liverpool’s strengths and weaknesses from what we have seen so far. Do they have what it takes to finish the season with the biggest silverware in English football. Let’s find out.
Where they have impressed
Well, if a team scores 30 goals from 11 games, it is not really hard to find out what is their biggest strength. Liverpool are best when playing on the front foot. The trio of Coutinho, Firmino and Mane have been in a sensational form since the very start of the season. Mane has joined this summer while Firmino joined last season but when you see the trio on the pitch, it seems like they are playing together for years. They have a telepathic understanding between themselves.
Crediting the attacking trio of Liverpool for their good work only would be a bit wrong because the way Liverpool’s midfield trio have impressed with their work rate and quality in the attacking third. Jordan Henderson, Emre Can, Gini Wijnaldum and of course Adam Lallana have been sensational in the middle of the park with their pressing, movement and passing and have scored a decent number of goals.
Where they have disappointed
Among the top seven sides right now, Liverpool have conceded the most number of goals. In fact, the Reds had just one clean sheet this campaign that was against Manchester United. Even though Klopp’s boys are scoring for fun, they just can’t stop leaking goals which the German needs to take care if Liverpool have to win the title.
Liverpool leaking away cheap goals does not actually signify that their back four is weak. This is due to the fact that they stay very high and are vulnerable on the break. Matip and Lovren- Liverpool’s first-choice central defensive duo are both great passers and play a key role in the way Liverpool tear apart their opponents while Clyne and Milner both have created plenty of opportunities going forward.
They have conceded the most number of goals amongst the top seven teams despite being at the summit, which shows that they have to improve defensively.
