Liverpool are reportedly targeting Virgil Van Dijk of Southampton as they want to tighten their defence. The Reds had signed Joel Matip from Schalke and Ragnar Klavan from Augsburg in the summer but the defensive issues haven’t been rectified as of yet.
The defensive duo of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip has been shaky in patches as Liverpool have conceded 13 goals so far in this season, more than any other team in the top six positions. Liverpool have the knack of buying players from Southampton for the past two seasons. Adam Lallana, Ricky Lambert, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and more recently Sadio Mane were signed from The Saints.
Van Dijk has been very compact since his signing from Celtic last season and has impressed boss Ronald Koeman. He recently signed a five-year contract with the club and Liverpool will have to pay a large sum of money to land the defender at Anfield.
The 25-year-old Dutch has 10 appearances for the Holland national team and he has missed only eight games owing to an injury in the last five years. Van Dijk’s arrival means Lovren has to make way for the defender.
