When we will be talking about the best signings made in the last summer, Joel Matip will definitely be there on the list. What a signing Liverpool made in the form of the Cameroonian man mountain and that too for free. While the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all spent in the region of £30-40m or even more to bring in central defenders like Mustafi, Bailly, Stones and Luiz respectively, Jürgen Klopp made his business without spending a single penny which shows the German’s brilliance in the transfer market.
Klopp knows the Bundesliga players very well from his time spent at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund and it won’t be a surprise at all to see the Reds going to Germany once again in January in order to strengthen their squad to go all the way to the title. The Mirror claims that Klopp wants Schalke starlet Max Meyer in January in order to add more firepower to his performing attack.
Meyer is just 21 years of age and is rated among the best young players in the world. A sublime dribbler of the ball and someone who can outpace most defenders in the world, Meyer is a tailor-made player for Klopp’s system. The 21-year-old is primarily an attacking midfielder. Even though he offers his best as a number ten, he can also be deployed on the flanks or even as a number nine. The German’s versatility makes him even a more lucrative player.
Meyer is just 21 now and has already made 139 first-team appearances for the Bundesliga giants which speaks volumes about his potential. Meyer captained Germany in the Olympic Games that took place in the summer and one of the stellar performers there. The German international found the back of the net 4 times in six games in the Olympics but Germany were outclassed by Brazil in the final.
In many ways, Meyer is very similar to Philippe Coutinho thanks to their similar physique and technical abilities. Meyer boasts a brilliant ability on the ball and can dribble his way past a tight defence. Just like Coutinho, Meyer used to play Futsal in his childhood which helps a player with a brilliant balance and ball control.
Liverpool are enjoying their best form this season in a 4-3-3 system where the attacking trio exchanges positions between themselves. Coutinho, Firmino and Mane- the trio have been brilliant for the Reds this campaign but Liverpool might struggle without Mane in January when the Senegalese goes to African to represent his country in the African Cup of Nations.
If Liverpool can keep up their good form, they should be in the Champions League next season and will need more options once their fixture list becomes more hectic.
Meyer, being capable of playing anywhere in the attacking third, makes him a perfect player for the Reds. He is just 21 years of age and has whole his future ahead of him. Under his compatriot Klopp, Meyer could develop himself into a world beater. He has everything an attacking midfielder aspires of. All he needs is a good mentor and there are very few better mentors than Klopp for young attacking players.
