Multiple reports have emerged that Liverpool are eyeing FC Porto’s star striker Moussa Marega. The Mali international is currently on loan at Vitoria de Guimaraes and has been brilliant so far.
According to TalkSport, both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur had sent scouts to monitor the forward and both have returned with positive news on the 25-year-old Mali International. Earlier too, clubs like Crystal Palace and Stoke City were linked. The very recent club to keep tabs on the striker were Watford, who had enquired about him in the summer.
However, with a release clause of 35 million pounds on him, he is not very affordable to the mid-table English clubs, which could force them to drop out.
Marega has impressed this season by scoring 10 goals already in the league and also bagging 2 assists in 10 appearances. The 183 cm forward could prove to be a decent aerial threat in the Liverpool squad, who otherwise lack tall players up front. Klopp could be looking at a second-dimensional attack in the squad with Marega up front.
His unparalleled stamina makes Marega a perfect candidate to fit in Jürgen Klopp’s tactical play, which demands continuous pressing of the opponent’s defence forcing them to make mistakes. Marega, who plays as a second striker could very well play the role of false number 9, which Firmino does at the moment.
Marega’s stamina could be a huge asset for the Reds and his playing style, where he frequently likes to cut inside dribbling past defenders and isn’t afraid to take long shots, also adds to it. Having him would also prevent Klopp change his playing style in the absence of Firmino as Daniel Sturridge does not suit the role quite as much. Marega likes to tackle and chase defenders, which puts him in a superior position than Sturridge.
However, the beastly forward does have some weaknesses regarding his discipline and providing passes. It seems like his attitude to hassle prevents him to be more composed on the ball and in the game. He also loses the ball often while holding on to it. If he opts to join English top flight then he would have to improve and fast.
Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League table after their convincing 6-1 against win Watford on the weekend. The Premier League table is very tight at the moment with very little to separate the top four teams.
Liverpool would have to increase their squad depth to keep this form throughout the season when injuries will creep in and Marega seems like a decent option.
