Former Arsenal player Robert Pires has expressed his interest to be the next Sporting Director of Arsenal. The French midfielder is currently the ambassador of the club.
Pires played for the Gunners from 2000 to 2006. Pires last played for FC Goa in the Indian Super League and the 43-year-old desperately wants to help Arsenal in a different way. Arsenal have been in stupendous form this season and are one of the contenders for the Premier League title.
Pires said, “Yes, that is my objective [to become Arsenal’s sporting director].
“I don’t know what will happen in the future, but I need to talk about it with the owners and Arsene Wenger. I’d love this job, I love to talk with the players. If I’m given this job one day, I can stay in contact with football, especially with Arsenal.”
The Ex France International had a trophy-laden career at Emirates as he won two Premier Leagues and three FA Cups. He has ruled out a possibility of coaching Arsenal someday.
He added, “I have a good relationship with the manager, that’s important. I can work with the players, I can give advice to the young players, so we can find a good relationship between me and the players.
“For the moment, management is not in my plans, Thierry, Patrick and [Arsenal youth coach] Freddie Ljungberg have a very good future as managers. But it’s not for me, at least at the moment because I don’t have a [coaching] licence.”
