The arrival of Brendan Rodgers has worked its magic at Parkhead in the best possible way. The Hoops have improved drastically as a unit under the Northern Irishman. Yet to be beaten in any domestic game this season, Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football could become much greater if things stay the way they are right now. However, no matter how good you are, there is always a room for improvement. So, Rodgers looking reinforcements is not at all surprising despite good showings from his men.
According to the Mirror, Charlton Athletic defender Ezri Konsa has emerged as a top target for Celtic of late. The likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are all interested in the 18-year-old as per the same report but that has not deterred Celtic from their interest in the young sensation.
Rodgers pulled a masterstroke this summer with the signing of highly-rated Moussa Dembele from Fulham and the Frenchman has taken Scottish football by storm. If Celtic manage to bring the Konsa to the club, it could prove to be one hell of a deal from the Hoops.
Konsa is just 18 years of age and is enjoying a brilliant breakthrough campaign with the Addicks this campaign. Charlton got relegated from the Championship last season and are not having the best season in League One. However, Konsa has still managed to impress with his assured displays at the heart of the defence.
Nowadays each and every manager likes ball-playing defenders. Those days are long gone when defenders’ job was to only clear their line. Modern managers want their defenders to initiate attacks from the deep with their passing abilities. Especially attacking managers, who play a high line, like defenders who have bags of pace in their locker. Brendan Rodgers is such a manager and Konsa has every ability mentioned above.
Konsa has a frame of 6′ which is not the biggest for a defender but is a modern-day centre back who boasts a blistering pace to outpace the attackers. Still only 18, he is still young and needs much development to turn into a serious talent. Rodgers, so far in his career, has proved that he is never afraid to give a chance to young players. So, Konsa should be happy to join a manager like the Northern Irishman.
Celtic’s first-choice central defensive duo Sviatchenko and Simunovic is pretty solid but Toure is 35 now while Boyata and Ambrose have not done anything to be in Rodgers’ long-term plans. So, there is a brilliant opportunity for the 18-year-old to have a bright future at Parkhead.
