Chelsea moved to the top of the table as they continued their amazing run of form after a 1-0 victory at the Riverside Stadium. The Blues have been surprisingly omitted from the list of title favourites of many pundits but it is crystal clear they are one of the top contenders. With no Champions League to distract them, Conte seems to have found the perfect balance after a number of failures.
Diego Costa’s goal separated the two sides and Boro finally got beaten after enterprising draws against Arsenal and Manchester City.
Let us take a look at how the Chelsea players performed.
COURTOIS-6/10
Had a virtual off-day as the defence allowed very little to go though with a late Negredo effort needing attention.
AZPILICUETA-5.5/10
Not his best or cleanest performance. Joined in attack but was late into tackles on several occasions.
LUIZ-6.5/10
Getting better each day. Strong and authoritative. Ventured forward well.
CAHILL-7/10
Comfortable on the ball. Stepped out. Passed well. Defended better. Has taken up the mantle well and John Terry’s path back into the team looks doubtful now.
MOSES-8/10
The biggest success story for Conte. His rejuvenation doesn’t seem like stopping anytime soon. A Powerhouse of a player. Dribbling ability, sharp footballing brain and physicality.
ALONSO-5.5/10
Comfortable on the ball. Settled well after a few anxious moments when in possession. Looking more of an ex-Real Madrid player than an Ex-Bolton man.
MATIC-7/10
Calm influence at the centre of the field. Carried the ball forward effortlessly and sprayed the ball around turning over possession. Had a few positional errors, though.
KANTE-6.5/10
The usual tireless performance from the Frenchman. Building a good partnership with Moses on the right. Passed well and had a good contribution in attack as well.
HAZARD-7.5/10
Was buzzing throughout. Went on his mazy runs on a number of occasions and it was difficult getting the ball off him. Involved in almost all of Chelsea’s attacks.
PEDRO- 7.5/10
Another success story under Conte. The Spaniard has looked livelier and full of confidence after a depressing spell last year. From apparently seeking the exit door, he has become one of the most important members of the team now. Denied by the crossbar late on.
COSTA- 8/10
Another day. Another goal for the former Atletico Madrid man. Was alert and made sure to capitalise on the very first mistake made by Boro. Another player who was apparently unsettled in the transfer window is coming good.
