Carlo Ancelotti suffered his first defeat in the Bundesliga as Thomas Tuchel’s Borussia Dortmund side claimed a hard-fought 1:0 victory over the Bavarian champions. While it is fair to say that Bayern haven’t been in the groove this season, they are still second in the league behind Leipzig. In this article, we will rate the Bayern players in their defeat to Dortmund.
Manuel Neuer (7.5/10): Even though he couldn’t keep out Aubameyang’s opener, the German international did really well from then onwards, keeping out a clear cut chance from Aubameyang plus some few other good saves.
Philipp Lahm (7/10): Was decent on the right side, and put in a good shift, however, he lacked the offensive qualities to breach down the Dortmund defence from the flanks. Didn’t have too many issues defensively, though.
Jerome Boateng (7/10): Hasn’t been in the best of form and suffered a few defensive problems against Dortmund, especially against Adrian Ramos but did well after conceding the first goal.
Mats Hummels (7.5/10): Arguably Bayern’s best player on the night, Hummels offered a few dimension with his buildup qualities but he suffered to cope with Aubameyang’s pace. There were times where he tried but failed to beat the Gabonese superstar. Hummels was also dangerous with set pieces.
David Alaba (7/10): Was given little to think of defensively, spent most of the time bombing down the left flank where he looked dangerous with his crosses but just failed to carve out a clear-cut opportunity for his side.
Joshua Kimmich (6/10): Had a really poor game, Kimmich’s influenced waned in the second half and from then on, he was almost invisible and provided little in the middle of the pitch.
Xabi Alonso (7.5/10): The Spaniard was good in the buildup and controlled the midfield really well but his back pass almost resulted in a second goal for Aubameyang. His brilliant long range striker hit the crossbar in the final few mins.
Thiago Alcantara (7/10): Thiago was good in passing and largely performed well in the middle of the pitch. He was also solid in possession and his ball distribution in the final third was smart. But failed to breach the Dortmund defence.
Thomas Muller (6/10): Muller again failed to perform in the league, as he provided little service to Bayern upfront. Largely nullified by Marcel Schmelzer on the right wing, Muller is arguably Bayern’s worst player on the night.
Robert Lewandowski (6.5/10): It was one of those games where the Polish International’s luck just didn’t click. He made a nuisance of himself inside the box as he desperately tried to fire his side back into the game. But the football gods decided against him.
Franck Ribery (7/10): Ribery was very influential in the final third, beating players one on one, playing neat one-two passes and getting behind the lines but to his misfortune, Sokratis and co. handled everything thrown at them on the night.
