Thomas Tuchel earned his first ever victory against Bayern Munich since joining the Black and Yellows last season. A rigid defensive work saw his men claiming a hard-fought 1:0 win over the Bavarian champions, therefore, opening up the league. Let’s look at how the Borussia Dortmund players performed on the right, as we rate their performance in Der Klassiker.
Roman Burki (7.5/10): Wasn’t tested as much as he had predicted but pulled off some decent moments and was very committed and confident with his handling and decision making. A worthy clean sheet.
Lukasz Piszczek (8/10): Defended incredibly well on the right-hand side of the defense. Constantly breaking up play, making interceptions and fighting hard to keep Bayern Munich at bay. The Polish international also blocked four shots from the opposition, which is extraordinary.
Sokratis (9/10): Proved his defensive credentials against Bayern Munich. The Greek international was basically ready for the challenge even before the game even kicked off, defended everything that was thrown at him. Making 11 clearances and blocking two shots as well.
Matthias Ginter (8/10): The former Freiburg man put in an excellent defensive shift, attempted four tackles and was a pivotal part in the heart of Dortmund’s defence.
Marc Bartra (8.5/10): Was amazing in defence, attempted the most tackles in the game(7) and also made eight clearances. Bartra was very important for Dortmund’s pressing game as well as he was seen going up the pitch to break up the play.
Marcel Schmelzer (8/10): Played a captain’s role today. Schmelzer sat deep and spent most of his time on the left-hand side, defending diligently. While also keeping Thomas Muller uncharacteristically quiet.
Julian Weigl (8/10): Made himself a strong like in midfield. composed and confident, the 21-year-old youngster is fluently improving game after game, and certainly looks like a big game player. Operated the back four well and guarded it properly while also being smart with his offensive distribution.
Mario Gotze (8/10): Extremely influential in the first phase of the game, Mario Gotze, marked his first appearance against his former club with an assist, as he squared up his ball through the legs of Mats Hummels. Overall, he was forced to make too many defensive actions, in which he failed to deliver and got rightfully subbed off in the latter stages.
Andre Schurrle (7.5/10): Similar to Gotze, Schurrle made a lot of offensive work in the first phases but his attacking flair started to fade away as the game went on. However, the former Wolfsburg man worked hard and covered a lot of grounds to keep his team in the lead.
Adrian Ramos (7.5/10): After surprisingly starting ahead of Ousmane Dembele, we could probably say, Ramos has done just enough to vindicate Tuchel’s faith in him. The Colombian covered a lot of ground and was very good in the holdup play.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (8/10): As always, Aubameyang showed his pace against Bayern and was a constant threat on the break. The Gabonese international also showed his commitment to working hard and link with Ramos as a pressing unit.
