This Bundesliga season has produced much excitement over the 10 game period and with 10 match days already over, we are heading into the international break next week. For the meantime, the 4th official is running a Bundesliga team of the season series, in its past two series, we covered the defence and the midfield, combining some of Bundesliga’s top performers.
In this final series, we will be heading into the most interesting part which is the attack. The 4-4-2 formation will have two remaining spots for the frontmen.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Borussia Dortmund
Probably the most contemplated player to make the team of the season. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has refined to be one of Europe’s most lethal attackers since joining Dortmund in 2013. His scoring rate at Dortmund is just sensational; scoring 94 goals in 157 matches all competitions, Aubameyang has proved a key member for the black and yellows.
This season, the Gabonese international has successfully carried his blistering scoring form of last season, despite Dortmund struggling to find the rhythm in these early stages of the season. Aubameyang has already registered 11 goals to his name in the Bundesliga. The 27-year old also gave out his first assist of the season, when he threaded in a brilliant half-volleyed through ball for Dembele in his side’s 5:2 win over Hamburg.
Boasting a devastating burst of speed, Auba has the ability to terrorise the opposition defence on any given day. This season, however, Thomas Tuchel’s newly minted side has somewhat failed to make use of the pace they have on the team. That does not say to however that Aubameyang hasn’t been able to produce his best. Thomas Tuchel’s team had to rely a lot on the Gabonese’s goal scoring abilities due to their problem in midfield, resulting in fewer chances than last season. Recently been voted as a Ballon D’Or nominee for 2016, Aubameyang also scored in all of his three games in the Champions League.
As the season wears on, the Gabonese international will hope to get more service as players such as Marco Reus, Andre Schurrle get back to full fitness.
Anthony Modeste – 1. FC Koln
Partnering alongside Aubameyang in the team of the season is Anthony Modeste of Cologne. The French forward moved from Hoffenheim to join Koln last season and instantly became a hit with Die Effzeh. Scoring 15 goals and providing five assists last season, Modeste was one of Bundesliga’s best forwards last season. However, the intriguing battle between superstars such as Robert Lewandowski, Chicharito, Thomas Muller and Aubameyang for the goal scorer crown somewhat shadowed the excellent performance of Anthony Modeste.
However, the Frenchman has been getting the recognition he deserves this season as he jointly leads the race for the Torjägerkanone along with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with 11 goals. Modeste’s stat in the opposition half is very impressive. The big striker averages 2.7 shots inside the penalty area and has taken more shots than anyone else in the league with 39, 36 of them coming from inside the box.
A massive aerial threat, Modeste is probably the best header of the ball along with Sandro Wagner in the league. The Frenchman has totalled 72 duels this season, 39 of them being aerial battles, where he has a success rate of 53%. Modeste’s karate kick goal against Bayern in his sides’ 1:1 draw against the champions has been the highlight of his goal-scoring exploits with Cologne. And we are sure to seeing some more insane and jaw-dropping moments from the French forward as the season wears on.
The instillation of two forwards in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Anthony Modeste completes our team of the season of Bundesliga after match day 10. It was a tough decision to leave out some other worthy candidates such as Andrej Kramaric of Hoffenheim but these two players have been really sensational and formed as an important part of their respective teams.
