Manchester City had a busy summer in every regard with their long-term managerial target Pep Guardiola coming onboard and implementing sweeping changes in personnel and mentality of the club. While the results have been mixed till now as it is not an overnight procedure he has started at City, the signs have been positive and indicative of the fact that City are going to have a big say in club football in the years to come.
But today we will take a brief look at how the new summer arrivals have performed thus far.
JOHN STONES- 8/10
He came at a premium but it was a risk City and Guardiola were willing to take and as the Catalan himself acknowledged English players automatically have a hike of around £15-20m when in demand. He was the ball playing centre-half Pep was so adamant about and it is opined that the effect of Pep’s coaching might have a similar impact as it had on Gerard Pique which bodes well for City’s future. He has played everything till now and is looking good.
ILKAY GUNDOGAN- 9/10
City backed their decision making and despite the long-term injury to the German midfield ace, they persisted with the deal and finally completed it. He had a late start and hasn’t put a foot wrong since his first game. Has fit like a glove in this City setup and has added goals to his repertoire. For £21m, can be called the signing of the season in the Premier League. He already has 5 goals in all competitions with a passing accuracy of 92%.
NOLITO- 7/10
The Spaniard started off brightly for City and seemed to be the perfect option in City’s search for goals from the wide areas. He was more often than not at the right place, at the right time and has scored 4 goals for them. He has gone off the boil since his moment of madness against Bournemouth and will look to get back in the groove after the International break.
LEROY SANE- 5/10
City know they can take a bit of time in his case and he is seen as one of the more important members of the team in future. But having played in a Euro cup semi-final, he cannot be termed as a newcomer. Chances have been few with Sterling, Nolito and Navas ahead of him but he has to hang in there and perform at every given opportunity.
CLAUDIO BRAVO- 6/10
The most controversial move of them all considering the man he was replacing. Fan favourite and a City legend, Joe Hart. Although he hasn’t set the Premier League on fire with is performances, he has the backing of the home support as they realise the need for Pep to change the dynamics of a keeper. But he has to attain a level of consistency now, especially after the Nou Camp fiasco.
