Arsenal are considering a move for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez. The defender has only played a single match in the La Liga this season for an injury.
Arsenal signed Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding in the summer to strengthen their defence. Per Mertesacker is in his thirties and is still recuperating from an injury sustained at the start of the season. The German defender will be out of the contract at the end of the next season and Arsenal might not extend his contract.
Gimenez has also been linked with Manchester United as Jose Mourinho has been in the search of a defender after successive injury setbacks to Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling.
Atletico want £57.8m for the player who has played 48 matches so far since joining them in 2013. He made his debut as a 19-year-old in the 2014 FIFA World Cup for Uruguay. Should arsenal choose to sign him he will fight for a place with Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny in the heart of The Gunners defence.
