Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Manchester United was supposed to be something that turns around the fortunes of the 20-time English champions who have struggled to keep their glory days intact since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. The start ‘The Special One’ had at Old Trafford is anything but special. They surely were the better team against Arsenal on Saturday but had to be content with a 1-1 draw as Olivier Giroud scored a very late equaliser for the Gunners.
Manchester United, as a unit, have been far from impressive but some players have impressed as individuals. Let us take a look at three such players-
Antonio Valencia
The Ecuador international has made the right-back place his own this season. Only twice in the Premier League, he has missed through injuries otherwise he has been ever-present at the right-hand side of the Manchester United back four. The 31-year-old has been impressive both attacking wise and defensive wise this term.
The Ecuador international has registered a passing accuracy of 86.1% this season while he has played 1 key pass every game. Completing 1.9 dribbles every game and delivering 1.3 crosses every game- he has been a menace up front while his defensive actions have also been top-notch. 3.1 tackles, 2.1 interceptions and 2.4 clearances every game- Valencia has been a watchful protector in the defence.
Ander Herrera
For two seasons, Herrera had been struggling for opportunities under Louis van Gaal despite delivering every time he had it coming his way. Mourinho also did not offer the Spaniard a chance right away but once he did that, Herrera did not let him down.
The Spaniard has been impressive with his defensive discipline. one goal and two assists from 14 games in all competitions- Herrera has been stamping his authority in the middle of the park on a regular basis. 88.1% passing accuracy, 2.9 tackles, 3 interceptions, 1.7 clearances, 1 key pass, 1.3 dribbles completed, 2.9 long balls played every game- Herrera has impressed this season with his all-around abilities.
Juan Mata
Very few expected Juan Mata to do well under Mourinho considering how poorly the two combined at Chelsea. 4 goals and 1 assist from 16 games in all competitions is not that impressive but he has been the best creative player for the Red Devils.
90.1% passing accuracy, 1.7 key passes, 1.1 dribbles completed- Mata has been excellent attacking wise for the Red Devils. Once out of favour under Mourinho at Chelsea, Mata is the heartthrob of Mourinho now and he deserves that.
