White Hart Lane saw a terrific late drama as the hosts scored a 92nd-minute penalty to register their first win in the last five matches in the Premier League. West Ham United failed to hold on to their lead twice and the match ended quite frustratingly for the Hammers as their centre-back Winston Reid saw two yellows in three minutes in the dying moments of the match.
The win doesn’t change their league position although it brings Tottenham Hotspurs at a touching distance with their fierce rival Arsenal who are in the 4th position now. West Ham United also stays in their position just above the relegation zone.
3 Talking Points from Tottenham’s win over West Ham United
Tottenham’s lacklustre performance
To be honest, Spurs did not deserve the win or at least they didn’t play to win it. After starting off both the halves brilliantly and with a lot of intent, they just switched off their game helping West Ham take the lead both the times. Mauricio Pochettinno looked really upset on his team’s performance that looked purposeless and lacked convictions. Something tells me (just a hunch) if West Ham had not taken the lead, then Spurs would not have geared up their game to save the match.
However, with their win finally coming after four games now, they will look to build on it as it is only deserving given the phenomenal way they started their season.
Is Harry Winks the next big thing?
Pochettino had little choice about filling in the position of Moussa Dembele but what a replacement this has been. Harry Winks looked the only player with an intent in the whole Spurs team. Although he got carried away at times which was quite normal given the 20 years old’s Premier League debut, but the England midfielder is one for the keeping. He was everywhere, thanks to his young and fuelled lungs.
He completed 15 attacking third passes, recovered the ball 7 times, made 2 successful tackles, made 2 interceptions and also had two shots on the goal. We hope to see him more often now.
West Ham United’s nightmarish season continues
Slaven Bilic has tried everything to his power and knowledge, but the team doesn’t seem to come back to winning ways. Even Sunderland have left behind their horrendous start to the season, winning two in a row, but the Hammers are somehow not clicking this season. The front line showed enough grit to lead at White Hart Lane twice but the defence are tremendously poor in holding on to the lead.
