Arsenal has to break the bank if they want to extend the contract of Mesut Ozil, Arsene Wenger said.
Ozil was signed from Real Madrid for a club record fee of £42.5 m. Ozil is right now on his final year of his contract and wants the club to make an offer that he can’t refuse. The German playmaker currently is on a £140,000-a –week payroll but evidently wants a hefty wage rise. The Gunners did offer him a £180,000 a week but he rejected it. It is reported that he is now demanding a whopping £250,000 a week to sign a new contract.
Wenger joked, “I don’t think he needs convincing, he wants to stay here. If you have a good bank, call me.”
Wenger didn’t want to reveal the details, “We keep that discreet, at due time we will come out with that. We want to keep our best players, of course. The more I say that, the more he is in a stronger position.”
Ozil has been linked with a return to his former club Real Madrid throughout thhis season. He reportedly was not sure about the renewal of his contract and has asked the club to make more signings so that they can challenge for the title.
Wenger, who recently completed 20 years at The Emirates, believes that Arsenal can end their title drought, “It’s not just money,” “Arsenal can win titles of course. But that’s what we have to show. We are in a league where Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea everybody fights and you cannot guarantee that to anybody.”
