Manchester United have clearly told Jose Mourinho that he has to sell one defender if he wants to sign Southampton centre-back Jose Fonte.
The Portuguese centre-back has been on Mourinho’s radar for a long time. He tried to sign him in the summer transfer window but failed to lure him. The 32-year-old defender, who has a contract till 2018, played an influential role in Portugal’s maiden EURO triumph this year. He was signed from Crystal Palace in 2010.
United have to shell out in the region of £10m to secure the services of the defender. Fonte revealed that he hasn’t been offered a new contract by The Saints.
Mourinho signed Eric Bailly from Villareal for £30m and the defender has been good so far. But he has to join Ivory Coast on international duty as the African country has qualified for the African Cup Of Nations in January, which will leave their defensive line quite thin.
Either Marcos Rojo or Matteo Darmian could face the sack if the gaffer wants to bring the defender to The Old Trafford.
