Jose Mourinho has dedicated the win against Manchester City to the Manchester United Supporters. United defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the EFL Cup fourth round tie with a sublime finish from Juan Mata. Jose Mourinho was under severe pressure after a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Chelsea. He couldn’t afford another loss against their noisy neighbours as the Spaniard already got the better of him when City defeated them 2-1 in the Premier League earlier.
Guardiola has a very good record against Mourinho. The two have now faced each other 18 times with the Portuguese winning on four occasions. City’s loss means that Guardiola is now winless in six games for the first time in his managerial career.
“The players did everything and deserved to win. We are happy.” Mourinho said.
“In the last week, everything went against us but we are professionals. The fans felt deeply such a negative result and today was a good chance to clear that feeling because a derby knockout and to win gives everyone a better feeling.”
The 4-0 defeat was the heaviest defeat in Mourinho’s Premier League career. The gaffer thanked the fans for backing their teams despite conceding four goals in the last match, “We lost 4-0 and they were supportive. Today the stadium was full of real support and it looks like the love people have for the club is bigger than bad results, bigger than three bad seasons.
“Yes. We were on a good run of results, but it was a big defeat — numbers that the history of this club doesn’t deserve and, when I’m in a club, my heart belongs to the fans and I felt deeply for them,” he added.
United will next host Burnley on Saturday and will look forward to carrying the momentum.
