Chelsea have made a better start under new boss Antonio Conte compared to their disastrous 2015-16 campaign. However, things are sill shaky despite what the league table reflects as they are yet to strengthen their squad the way Conte would have wanted them to, especially the defence.
The deadline day signing of David Luiz showed a certain sense of desperate attitude more than intent after failing to rope in their defensive targets during summer transfer window. But the former Juventus manager is already active in the market and looking for replacements of veterans Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill and John Terry who have passed their prime and are set to be released at the end of their contracts.
As per rumours, Chelsea are eyeing to land Portuguese veteran Képler Laveran Lima Ferreira a.k.a Pepe who has refused to sign a one-year contract extension with his current side Real Madrid. The 33-year old UEFA Euro 2016 and UEFA Champions League 2015-16 winner is currently in his final year of contract and holding out for a new two-year deal with the Spanish giants. But they are reluctant to improve the deal and thus the defender is exploring other options with Chelsea have reportedly shown genuine interest so far.
Will he be a solution to fasten depleted Blues back-line? Although the Real Madrid star is often criticized for his destructive style of play, statistically he is one of the best centre-backs of world football who is class as well as consistent. His disciplinary record might not speak on behalf of his quality, but the Portuguese international has been playing for one of the greatest football clubs in Europe with utmost reputation and won several majors since joining them back on 10th July, 2007 from Porto.
He is strong, a hard tackler, good in air and also lauded for his fine interception skill along with passing ability. He can mold himself sublimely with flow of the game and provides much needed experience and leadership expertise under immense pressure.
However, his statistics might be superior to current Chelsea centre-backs as well as few of their serious transfer targets, Pepe’s presence will not solve their defensive woes. He will be 34 in February and have little time to adjust with the competitiveness of Premier League football. Also, his attitude is troublesome and might create complications in a league where referees are known to be intolerant.
Conte should preferably focus on younger talents whom he can groom and spot as long term replacements. Chelsea youngster Andreas Christensen, who is currently on loan to Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach and was voted their ‘Player of the Year’ due to his influential performance during the previous campaign, deserves a chance in Conte’s squad. Young Frenchman Kurt Zouma should be an obvious starter once he fully recovers from his ACL injury. 21-year old AC Milan centre-back Alessio Romagnoli has been on Chelsea radar and will be a much sensible investment to strengthen their defensive unit for the longer run.
Nevertheless, Pepe on a free transfer still might be a utilitarian resource considering his vast experience in both club and country level. It is impossible to replace John Terry, but the much-needed leadership mastery can be carried forward by the veteran who is both hailed and hated extensively in the football world.
