If the reports are to be believed then there has been a significant development in Paris which has got many teams of Europe on red alert. PSG’s captain and talisman Thiago Silva has put his contract talks on hold with the player’s agent Paulo Tonietto confirming that the defender will not pen an extension until he is assured of Champions League football next season. Speaking to Calciomercato, the agent told, “A contract extension with PSG? For the moment, everything is on hold.”
“We are waiting for December to see how the club is doing. If PSG fails to qualify for the next Champions League, Thiago Silva will certainly not be signing an extension.
“The market? There are a lot of clubs that are interested in him.”
The comments have fueled speculation already as we all know that Chelsea are on the lookout for a centre-back and Antonio Conte won’t shy away from splashing out the cash again if a player of the quality of Thiago Silva is up for grabs.
There seems to be some more encouragement for Conte and Chelsea with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool also interested. Very recently in an interview with Sport Witness, Tonietto, when asked about a potential move to the Premier League for his client, said, “Chelsea are a big club, and the English league is the best in the world. We’re not negotiating a new contract, let’s see what happens before December. Thiago’s deal ends on June 30, 2017, if PSG don’t qualify for the Champions League. Everything is possible in football.”
Silva was regarded as a fantastic talent from his Fluminense days and cemented his reputation with his displays for A.C Milan. Playing alongside the legendary Alessandro Nesta, the Brazilian earned high praises from his defensive partner who remarked in 2009 that Silva would extend his life as a central defender.
After three years of stand-out performances with Milan, PSG, broke the transfer record making Silva the most expensive defender in the world when they signed him in 2012. Silva more than justified his transfer fee during his stay at the Parc des Princes, with his outstanding displays as the team literally swept all the domestic honours in the last four years since his arrival.
Signing Thiago Silva would not only instantly improve the Chelsea defence but would also be a huge statement of intent by the club which has endured a torrid time since mid-2015.
It remains to be seen if Silva decides to move and if he does if he chooses Stamford Bridge or not but with his good friend David Luiz already at Chelsea, it suddenly seems like Luiz can be finally useful for the Blues once again by wooing his compatriot to come to England, where he is currently.
