Marco Reus has been a constant presence in Borussia Dortmund for quite some time now. After moving from Gladbach for a hefty price tag of 17 million euros, Reus, has been one of biggest assets for the club in the past few years or so.
The 27-year old has been suffering from frequent injuries in his career as a Borussia Dortmund player, the latest of which came in the DFB Pokal final, tearing his abductor muscle.
However, after 143 days of absence, the German international has made a comeback to the training pitch and is all set to be back at full fitness in a matter of days.
Reus’ comeback will give his manager, Thomas Tuchel a sigh of relief. We take a look why Marco Reus will be an important part of this Dortmund squad.
The Ruhr side have signed a total of eight players this season with an astonishing average of 22.5 years. The inexperienced squadron of Thomas Tuchel, have so far failed to keep their consistency this season. Even though outscoring some very good oppositions such as Wolfsburg and Freiburg, they have fell victims to pressing machines like RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen.
As good the likes of Dembele and co. were, penetrating the ineffectual defensive lines of Wolfsburg, the youngster were clearly failing to breach in lines of Ralph Hasenhüttl’s deep line of defence. The foremost problem for the Black and Yellows was the lack of having an attacker, who could run in behind the channels or more precisely, a Marco Reus.
With Ousmane Dembele and Raphael Guerreiro, both trying to drift in on central positions, it’s avoiding Thomas Tuchel’s team an extra width, resulting in less spaces in the middle. Someone like Marco Reus, who likes to get in behind the line with his deadly runs, could cause more trouble to the opposition.
Another reason of Marco Reus’ immediate requirement will he his experience, despite aged only 27, the former Gladbach man, is already one of the experienced ones in the Dortmund roster this season. Recently, being voted in the cover of video game FIFA 17, Reus, shortly afterwards, was also handed in the role of club captain too. So, there’s no doubt the presence of Reus in the final third, could provide Dortmund with extra flair and dynamism as well as quality and leadership.
Reus had scored 23 goals all competitions last campaign, which is enough to prove his credentials as a world class attacker. The deadly pace of Reus and Auba will no doubt cause the opposition defence to sit back five or six yards deeper, lending the likes of Raphael Guerreiro and Gonzalo Castro, some extra space in the final third of the pitch.
Not only that, the famous duo of Mario Götze and Marco Reus will be reunited back at Dortmund this season. During their time together, in the 2012/13 season, the two became friends and were hugely successful too.
As for Götze, he will be seeking for a redemption after three horrid years with FC Bayern Munich and the incursion of his best friend Marco Reus, might just give him boost to bring back his lost confidence. Make no mistake, the ‘Gotzeus’ duo will be one to watch out for Dortmund this season.
