Hannover 96 Sporting director Martin Bader admitted that they are planning to re-sign Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker. The 32-year-old defender is currently injured and it will be very tough for him to break into the starting lineup as new signing Shkodran Mustafi is in good form. Mustafi was signed from Valencia and has been pretty solid since then.
Mertesacker came through the ranks of Hannover 96, he then moved to Werder Bremen in 2006 and helped them win the League title. Mertesacker was handed the captaincy by Arsène Wenger after the departure of Mikel Arteta.
Bader said, “We all know what Hannover means for Per, and maybe we can inspire him again for 96. The issue of Per Mertesacker is currently not high on the agenda.”
“It’s obvious, because we are in the second division and he is the captain of Arsenal.”
“A lot has to come together so that a return is possible. The first requirement is that we get promoted.” He added.
The veteran defender has appeared 207 times for the Gunners.
