The Bundesliga goes into a hiatus as international break takes over after Matchday six. Hot contenders Borussia Dortmund have started the season in a topsy-turvy fashion. After a summer of changes, Thomas Tuchel’s men are third in the table behind Hertha Berlin and leaders Bayern. The Black and Yellows have won four games this season while they have failed to pick a point in two of their three away games.
In this article, we will take a look at three of the best performers for Die Schwarzgelben this season…
- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has once again proved to be Dortmund’s go to man this season. The Gabonese International has been a real bargain for the Black and Yellows since moving from Saint-Etienne in 2013. Scoring 87 competitive goals in 152 competitive matches, Auba is now one of Borussia Dortmund’s top scorers of all time!!
It has been no exception this season, with Aubameyang already netting seven goals in just nine competitive matches for BVB. Five of those goals came in the Bundesliga, where he trails only to Javier Hernandez by one goal, for the top scorer crown.
In the summer, there was a massive speculation of Aubameyang, leaving to Real Madrid. But the Gabonese superstar eventually chose to stay at the Signal Iduna Park. The decision is paying off it seems, as the market value of Auba at Dortmund is on a constant growth. However, because of him being one of the hottest offensive prospects in Europe, this might shorten the chances of his stay at Westfalenstadion.
But for the moment, Auba seems to be in red-hot form and will once be an important player for Thomas Tuchel this season.
- Raphael Guerreiro
One of Dortmund’s eight new signings this season, Raphael Guerreiro arrived in summer from French outfit FC Lorient for 12 million euros. And with regards to his incredible performance in the European Championships this summer, it seems to be one of the bargains of the season. Guerreiro was voted one of three best young players in the tourney as well as being the best left-back of the competition.
After a radiant performance in the Euros, the 22-year old didn’t take time to settle in at his new club either, playing a host of roles, Guerreiro has been one of the bright spots for BVB this season.
Generally known as a left back, Guerreiro’s smartness and versatility make him suitable for virtually any position on the field. Under Tuchel, he has featured as a left wingback, central midfielder and also as a left attacking midfielder. Scoring three goals and providing four assists all competition.
- Gonzalo Castro
Arguably the best performer for the Black and Yellows this season, Gonzalo Castro has been a complete revelation since arriving at Dortmund after 14 seasons at Bayer Leverkusen. Even though, the 29-year old wasn’t a regular choice in the first phases of last season but quickly made a mark with the team in the Rückrunde.
This season, Gonzalo Castro has been the pillar of the Dortmund attack, proving to be a crucial player especially after the departures of Ilkay Gundogan and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Spanish-born German midfielder was deployed mainly as an advanced midfielder under Thomas Tuchel, where he scored three goals already this season. However, Castro has been much productive in terms of providing assists, having already bagged six assists so far, the former Leverkusen man is undeniably the most key player for Borussia Dortmund this season.
