Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger reveals that they are yet to offer defender Per Mertesacker a new contract. The German defender’s contract is expiring at the end of this season and has been sidelined due to an injury. Keeping an eye on this, Arsenal has signed Shkodran Mustafi from Spanish side Valencia for £35m.
Wenger revealed: “At the moment we have not dealt yet with that situation.
“We are not especially [waiting for him to be fit], but of course he has to come back.
“We will see together at some stage when he will be back in full training.”Wenger added.
Mertesacker was signed from Werder Bremen in 2011 and since then he has been a mainstay in the Arsenal defence.
The German was handed the captaincy after Arteta’s retirement but Mertesacker has not played a single game this season and it looks like Arsene Wenger is very keen to assess the defender’s fitness before handing him a new contract.
