Mauricio Pochettino has warned his players after a poor 2-1 loss against Monaco. Bernardo Silva and Diego Lemar registered their name on the score sheet while Toby Alderweireld reduced the deficit just before the interval.
Pochettino sounded furious after he saw his team conceding two silly goals.
“We cannot concede how we did and we need to be more aggressive when we have the chances to score”.
“We showed a lack of passion because we cannot concede these goals. This is how we spoke in the changing room.” The Argentine revealed.
Spurs was playing in front of a sellout 85,000 packed Wembley stadium but it ended in a sheer disappointment. Alderweireld’s header gave Spurs a ray of hope but the Monaco defence stood strong to deny them from scoring for the remaining of the match. Harry Kane did have a golden chance to equalise but he wasted it.
“It was difficult to accept, not only the first goal but the second as well. At 2-0 it was really difficult. We were better than Monaco but they were more effective at both ends. To win we need to show more and be more aggressive. I talk about passion and it’s about feeling more. We need to improve and learn,” Pochettino added.
Monaco replicate the similar tactics what they had done with Arsenal in the last season defeating the gunners 3-1.
Jardim also said it might be the change of the pitch that went on to haunt Tottenham. “Tactically, the fact that Wembley is a larger pitch than White Hart Lane might have affected Tottenham negatively, because they like to press. On a bigger pitch, it is harder to close players down.”
Pochettino’s side were playing in the Champions League for the first time since 2010-11. Tottenham is building their new stadium and work has already started. The capacity of the new stadium will be 61,000.
