A lot has changed since Danny Drinkwater left his boyhood club Manchester United back in 2012. He was deemed not to be good enough for the first team of the Red Devils back then but he worked his socks off after that and now that he is a Premier League winner, Manchester United apparently want him back at Old Trafford of reports from The Mirror are believed to be true.
It was a remarkable story for Leicester City as they defied all the odds to go all the way to win the Premier League last season. The likes of Vardy, Mahrez and Kante mostly grabbed the headlines but Drinkwater was more of an unsung hero in the Foxes amazing title quest. Even though he signed a contract extension at King Power this summer only, the Foxes not being able to rediscover their form of the last season can make the English international consider leaving the Premier League holders.
An academy graduate of Manchester United and being a fan himself, an offer from the Red Devils could seem very lucrative for the Englishman. However, we would say that it will be an absurd move from Mourinho. Drinkwater has failed to live up to the standards he set for himself last season and until he does that, we can call him a one season wonder.
In Drinkwater, Mourinho is probably looking for a central midfielder who is pretty much an all-round player. He has a similar player at his disposal in Morgan Schneiderlin who is more proven at the top level when compared to Drinkwater. With a French connection between Schneiderlin and Pogba, Mourinho needs to play them together in midfield to see how they fare before looking for other options.
Yes, Drinkwater had an excellent last season but his stats this season looks much average. The English international has recorded a passing accuracy of just 77.9% this season which is poor for a central midfielder. He is also not someone who can add a number of goals or assists for his side. Drinkwater had made as many as 4.2 tackles and 1.5 interceptions every game this season but his productivity attacking wise has been average.
Mourinho likes his side to play 4-2-3-1 mostly and to get the best in this formation, he needs two more of complete midfielders in the middle of the park. Morgan Schneiderlin looks like a much better package than Danny Drinkwater and Mourinho needs to use the Frenchman. January is still a long time to go and by that time if Schneiderlin fails to deliver, he can of course for someone else.
