Arsene Wenger has explained why he chose to start Alexis Sanchez instead of new signing Lucas Perez who was signed from Deportivo La Coruna this past summer.
Wenger pushed Sanchez up front as a makeshift striker and that is giving dividends to the team. The Gunners have now scored 13 goals including a 3-0 thrashing of Chelsea in their last four games. Perez has so far started only one game and that too in EFL Cup against Nottingham Forest. He scored a brace and created another one in the match.
Wenger said, “At the moment he [Sanchez] looks like he has the ingredients to do very well there [upfront]. He’s getting stronger in every single game.”
Wenger had praised the Spaniard after their 4-0 win over Nottingham saying that the Striker is quick, determined and has all the qualities to be a top quality striker.
Theo Walcott who has been in sublime form for The North London side also hailed Sanchez. Walcott was playing as a striker last season had been pushed to the right wing by Wenger.
“It has started off very well. I will look back on this game [against Basel] but, yeah, the combinations between me and him [Sanchez] are very positive at this moment in time.”
“We seem to sort of know when we play off each other quite well. If he comes short, I go long and we have just got a good sort of combinations.”
