Swansea City have smashed their transfer record having confirmed the signing of Borja Baston from Atletico Madrid for £15.5m. The Spaniard has signed on a 4-year deal which will keep him at the Liberty Stadium till at least 2020. Baston will take up the No.10 jersey formerly worn by Andre Ayew who left for West Ham a couple of days back. Swans manager Francesco Guidolin has raided Spain recently for another bumper signing in the form of Fernando Llorente who will welcome his compatriot to the club.
Swansea have seen major changes in personnel this summer and quite a few new faces will step out on the field when they start the new season. The Liberty Stadium outfit had offloaded Bafetimbi Gomis and Eder early on in the summer leaving them woefully short in the striking department and with the sale of Ayew they were down to bare bones. While the club was linked with former star Wilfried Bony, they seem to have taken a different route and recruited Fernando Llorente and Borja Baston in quick succession. The fans would be pretty pleased with the new signings and the fact they have managed to retain Sigurdsson is seen as a major positive.
Borja Baston was born in Madrid and incidentally played as a goalkeeper as a kid. But his father took a wise decision unknowingly when he advised his son to play higher up the pitch so that he could enjoy the game more(!) And Swansea would be thankful to his father we guess, now that he has signed for their club and will look to ply his trade in the most lucrative league in the world. He has come up through the ranks at Atletico Madrid and played for the B-team 37 times. After that, the player went on loan to several clubs, latest of which was to La Liga side Eibar. He scored 18 goals for them and subsequently caught the eye of a number of potential suitors.
Swansea will hope he can carry forward his momentum for them and form a potent partnership with Llorente up for.
Swansea fans were absolutely over the moon and even other clubs were impressed by the signing, though some usual suspects also tweeted their disapproval of the transfer fee.
