After the Opening weekend Euphoria, Jürgen Klopp’s team was brought crashing down to the harsh realities of the competitive Premier league as newly promoted Burnley beat them with a 2-0 scoreline. Liverpool did dominate possession in the game but were terrible in the opposition penalty box where it mattered the most. It meant that the Reds suffered their first defeat of the season and dropped points in a game they were expected to win. Let’s see how the players fared on a scale of 10.
Simon Mignolet (5/10)
Did spray passes nicely from the back and covered well a few times but conceded two goals again today. The concerning thing was that the goalkeeper conceded goals from the opposition’s first two shots on target and has not done enough to warrant his place in the team.
Nathan Clyne (5/10)
Went up regularly providing the support in the attack but was a bit wasteful with his passing. Was frustrated by the combination by Ward and Boyd and he wasn’t able to provide the penetration needed. Was also at fault for the first goal conceded by his team.
Dejan Lovren (6/10)
Did very well at the back with his presence, winning all of his tackles and making necessary interceptions. Passed with accuracy and was good aerially as well
Ragnar Klavan (4/10)
Didn’t have the best of days today. Was a bit hesitant in his tackles and as a result won just 2 of attempted 5 of them. Was easily bypassed most times as Burnley made serious inroads with their counter attacks.
James Milner (6/10)
Played well as the left-back but only in the attacking sense. Couldn’t provide the defensive solidity needed. Created 4 chances for his teammates could have done better with his crossing but used possession well and was a threat down the left.
Adam Lallana (7/10)
Did decently in the midfield, playing good passes into the spaces for his teammates to exploit. Was poor with his shots, though. Tried to make things happen with his dribbling and passing but was unsuccessful.
Jordan Henderson (7/10)
Kept the midfield ticking with his accurate passing and provided a lot of work-rate but couldn’t help his team to score a goal. Was very good in his covering but suffered from lack of cover in the midfield during counter-attacks of the Home Team.
Georginio Wijnaldum (4/10)
Poor performance by the new signing in the midfield. Should have done better in the attacking phase. Remained anonymous all game.
Roberto Firmino (4/10)
Simply a poor performance by the Brazilian. Couldn’t offer any penetration which the team lacked in front of the goal and was not able to influence the game in any way
Philippe Coutinho (4/10)
The problem of inconsistency strikes again for Liverpool’s midfield maestro. Was hugely disappointing with his shooting and decision making. A poor performance to say the least.
Daniel Sturridge (4/10)
A disappointing performance by the English striker. He got into some good positions but seemed not sharp enough to bury his chances.
Subs
Divock Origi (5/10)
Came on in the second half to provide the cutting edge in the attack but couldn’t do so.
Alberto Moreno (4/10)
Replaced Milner to provide the attacking threat in the closing stages but really did nothing apart from giving possession away with a direct pass to a Burnley player
Marko Grujic (6/10)
Made an impact after coming on, did provide some impetus to the forward attacking play and tested the keeper with a good shot late on.
