The new season of the Premier League starts next weekend and Hull City are in a difficult place right now being without a manager. It was a hammer blow to them when Steve Bruce handed his resignation from the job after four long years managing the Tigers. A newly-promoted side are expected to make good use of the transfer market to bolster their squad but Hull City have been incapable of doing to the tricky situation at the backroom.
Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has been linked closely with the vacant Hull City job and the 50-year-old wants Torino striker Maxi Lopez to join him in England if he gets the gig as per Italian media house Gazzetta World. Lopez has a contract until 2018 with the Granata and the interest from Hull is still informal and but the interest is likely to accelerate as Zola’s appointment gets officially declared.
Bringing a new forward should be a priority for Hull City this summer. Abel Hernandez had a brilliant season in the Championship last campaign but the Uruguay international is yet to reach the heights in the Premier League and the Tigers having only him as an accomplished forward would be a big gamble, something they cannot afford. Adama Diamonde failed to make his mark last season after moving to the KC Stadium while Greg Luer is too young and inexperienced for the job.
Maxi Lopez will offer a wealth of experience to the Hull City attack but he is not the player Hull City need. The quality of the Premier League is now right at a level where the Tigers need to look for a better striker to thrive at the top or else another immediate relegation could be awaiting them.
Lopez scored just four goals in 26 Serie A appearances last season. That is far from the proficiency Hull City need from their new forward. Throughout his journeyman career in Argentina, Spain and Italy, Lopez could never establish himself as an accomplished goal-getter and at the age of 32, he will find Premier League very hard to succeed in.
Lopez is a forward who neither excels in the air nor good with his linkup play. He had won only 0.5 aerial duels last season while his passing was also poor (just 66.2%). The 32-year-old does not have what it takes to succeed in the Premier League and Hull should avoid moving for him.
