David Luiz is certainly one of the most beloved footballer players on the planet without any shadow of a doubt. Having secured his mega-money move to Paris Saint-Germain two years back becoming the most expensive defender in the history of football, the Brazilian is still a likeable figure at Stamford Bridge. He was one of the Blues’ heroes in the Champions League win four years back and the crazy transfer window has linked the former hero back with the London giants.
It has been a record-breaking transfer window in the Premier League this summer with £1 billion already spent. However, considering the activity on Tuesday and we still expect some splashing of cash on the deadline day. Chelsea, meanwhile have provided a major shock by making a £32m bid for PSG defender David Luiz.
It is a public knowledge that Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has been in the market throughout the summer for a quality defender. The Daily Star claims that he had tried and failed to sign AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli and Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli and has turned towards one of Chelsea’s former stars, the costliest defender in the planet.
Oil-rich club PSG are neither short of money nor short of intent. Luiz, a central figure of Emery Unai’s plans at Parc des Princes, is unlikely to be shown the exit door from the French champions regardless of whatever money Chelsea are offering. Still only 29 years old, Luiz still has plenty to offer to the French giants and it’s really a foolish move from Chelsea.
The reason why Conte went for Luiz is clear, though. The former Juventus manager loves ball-playing defenders and had a fixed backline at both Juventus and Italy which looked almost invincible. Bonucci, Chiellini and Barzagli were not only the pillars in defence for Conte but they also acted to be the foundation of every move the team made. With Terry aged 35 now, and Zouma coming back from a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Conte is extremely short of quality options at the back and a player like Luiz could ideally change the whole scenario.
There is a bright side for Chelsea though. Luiz, time and time again in his career, has shown that he loves Chelsea from the core of his heart. If the 29-year-old persuades PSG to accept Chelsea’s offer, a deal could materialise but PSG won’t get the time to find an alternative for him. So, the summary is Chelsea should better forget about this deal.
