To pull off the best transfers, you don’t always need to spend big. A manager’s credentials are also judged by the fact that how well he understands the club’s financial position and act likewise. Many might not like Tony Pulis for the brand of football he believes in but it has to be admitted that the Welshman always does the right thing for the club. He has never splashed too much cash in the market and still always came up with the result. That is why Pulis is a perfect manager for a mid-table club.
Since his appointment as the manager at the Hawthorns, Pulis has steadied the West Brom side but it’s high time for them to aim for bigger things. If you settle for mediocrity for too long, soon you will find that you have been left behind by those who were behind you and the same goes for West Brom. If Pulis can manage to bring a few quality players during the summer transfer window, the Baggies will definitely be in contention for a top-half finish next season.
The Daily Star are claiming that West Brom are looking to sign out of contract defender Jose Enrique on a free transfer. The 30-year-old was released by Liverpool last month after five long years at Merseyside. The Spaniard is quite rich with Premier League experience having represented Newcastle 129 times and Liverpool 99 times. Pulis is a known admirer of the Spanish full-back and made a failed attempt to coax him from Liverpool last summer.
West Brom are in dire need for a left-back considering how they kept on playing either James Chester or Jonny Evans at the left-hand side of the back four last season. Yes, we know Pulis wants all his eleven players on the pitch to defend deep but no manager is that defensive to play central defenders at full-back week in week out.
Sebastien Pocognoli not being very solid in terms of defensive abilities probably was the reason why players like Evans and Chester had been preferred ahead of him at left-back. However, things will definitely change with the arrival of Enrique who is a seasoned Premier League campaigner. The Spaniard is a string full-back who excels both defensively and attacking wise.
One thing that might be worrying the West Brom fans is Enrique’s injury record. The Spaniard made only 21 appearances for Liverpool in the past three seasons after a series of injuries haunting him. Otherwise, for a free transfer, Jose Enrique could be one hell of a signing.
