David Moyes is not at all fondly remembered at Old Trafford but he does have a chance to make up for it if he brings Marouane Fellaini to his new club Sunderland. The Belgian, in his three years at Manchester United, never looked like a player who is good enough to play for the shirt and the fans would definitely love it if the midfielder departs their beloved club.
Fellaini has been a trusted general in Moyes’ last two clubs, with the Scot shelling out a total of £42million to sign him first at Everton, and then Manchester United. If reports from The Daily Express are believed to be true, Moyes is willing to reunite with the Belgian international at the Stadium of Light.
The Daily Express claims that £13m is the fee the Red Devils want for Fellaini whom they signed for £27.5m in 2013. That would be a considerable loss for the club but neither the fans nor the hierarchy would mind it provided how wasteful Fellaini has been in an United shirt.
However, Fellaini could definitely revive his career at Sunderland under a manager who knows him well. Moyes got the best out of Fellaini at Everton, making him a key player in the final third time and time again. At Everton, Fellaini was the lynchpin of the side and the Toffees played to his strengths which was not the case at Old Trafford.
Fellaini was never known for his passing range or flamboyance or grace like most midfielders. Moyes used him in a wrong manner at Manchester United. He never was a defensive midfielder. Fellaini should be used pretty much a free and mobile midfielder. With his aerial prowess, Fellaini is able to create chances for his strikers. The Belgian can be a menace to opposing defenders with his physical presence and tenacity.
It’s quite well-known that Sunderland are in the market to add a striker who would help out veteran Defoe with the goals. Despite not being a striker, Fellaini’s arrival would help feed Defoe with opportunities. The Black Cats need a player who would be further forward than the two deeper midfielders and Fellaini is exactly that.
Fellaini is well capable of adding goals to the side and extremely dangerous from set-pieces. The Black Cats need to add more goals to the side next season and Fellaini could provide them that. In his final full season with the Toffees back in 2012/13, he scored 11 goals and made five assists. Fellaini is a brilliant player when you know how to use him. Moyes knows the Belgian inside out and with both needing a fresh start in their career, it’s perhaps better if they reunite in order to do that.
