Swansea City are leading the chase to sign Yeovil Town right-back Tom James next summer. According to recent reports, the Swans are the favourites to secure his services after keeping tabs on the player all season. However, they could face stiff competition from Celtic and Bournemouth in pursuit of the 21-year-old’s signature.
The Welsh outfit have been closely monitoring James’s progress in recent matches and are eager to add the Welsh defender to their squad ahead of the new campaign, especially considering that they have been weak in the right-back position, where Kyle Naughton has failed to cut the mustard this season.
James is highly versatile and can play anywhere across the backline which makes him an ideal fit for any of his potential suitors. He is also gathering the interest of the reigning Scottish champions Celtic and Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth after becoming an integral member of Darren Way’s first team. Yeovil have climbed up the league table towards League Two safety in recent times while they have also made a good run in the FA Cup eventually losing out to Manchester United at home in the fourth round of the competition.
James penned a new deal with the club in January and still has two years left to run on his current contract with Yeovil Town. The Welsh youngster is likely to drive a price less than £500,000 as he has only been in Yeovil’s ranks for 18 months. He has previously featured for Cardiff City where he made his Premier League debut under the guidance of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.
Swansea City has pulled off a miracle comeback in the Premier League under new manager Carlos Carvalhal and are currently occupying 14th place in the Premier League table following a string of positive results in the league over the past few weeks which include victories over both Liverpool and Arsenal. They are still in danger of getting relegated at the end of the season with just four points separating them from 18th placed Crystal Palace.
The addition of a young and promising defender like James could turn out to be a shrewd addition for the Swans as the Welsh right-back will undoubtedly bolster Carlos Carvalhal’s defensive options going into the new season. He has featured in 40 matches for Yeovil Town this term, scoring once while making two assists in all competitions. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of James and whether he ends up making a move to the Liberty Stadium next summer.
