Swansea City are looking to secure the services of Celtic forward Leigh Griffiths. Some sources are claiming that the Swans has recently shown interest in the player and is going to battle it out for his signature with Major League Soccer side Sporting Kansas City. The 27-year-old Scotland international is under contract at Celtic until 2020 but has struggled for regular game time this season, having made to fight for his place in Brendan Rodgers’ squad with the likes of Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard.
It is understood that the reigning Scottish champions value him in excess of £7m and consider him as a key figure in Brendan Rodgers’ squad. However, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace are also looking to make an approach for the player along with the Swans.
The Welsh club are currently rock bottom of the Premier League and are in dire need of reinforcements in the January transfer window. New manager Carlos Carvalhal is likely to be on the lookout for a proven goal-scorer in the current market and Leigh Griffiths fits the bill perfectly. It remains to be seen whether a fee could be agreed between the two clubs as his asking price would be a major stumbling block for any potential deal to take place.
The 27-year-old has been in terrific form for both club and country this season. He has featured in 30 matches for Celtic in all competitions and has scored 10 goals and made 8 assists so far. His record this season proves how good he can be and his unselfishness in front of goal can be a major asset for the Swans if they manage to acquire his services.
The Scottish international has already experienced playing in English football during his time at Wolverhampton Wanderers where he scored 13 goals in 31 competitive matches. He has also earned 17 international caps for Scotland and has found the back of the net 4 times for his country.
Swansea City currently finds themselves rock bottom in the Premier League standings with a tally of 16 points in 22 league matches. They look destined for relegation unless their new manager Carlos Carvalhal can conjure up something remarkable going into the second half of the season. The addition of Griffiths to their starting eleven could go a long way in improving their chances of potentially saving themselves from the drop. It remains to be seen whether the Swans are successful in their attempts to fend off strong competition from fellow Premier League rivals in pursuit of Griffiths’ signature.
