Liverpool are reportedly interested in Atalanta attacker, Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez to fill the void left by their star-studded Brazilian, Philippe Coutinho. His departure has brought in a significant amount of financial leverage which the Reds will look levy to secure an optimal replacement.
Gomez is a versatile attacker who can appear from the wings and as a supporting striker but is best suited in the number ten role. His remarkable 16 goal tally along with 12 assists helped Atalanta achieve a surprising fourth spot finish in the Serie A. Clearly the 29-year-old is in no mood to slow down either, having netted the ball seven times already this season while setting up his teammates on eight occasions.
Ever since his arrival to the Italian outfit back in the summer of 2014 from Metalist Kharkiv, Papu has established himself as a key offensive figure and has lead the team in scoring in his second season with the Nerazzurri. The Argentine started his professional career playing for Arsenal de Sarandi before making a move to San Lorenzo and then furthering his career in Europe.
Gomez is a bright creative spark with a keen eye for goal. Blessed with top-pedigree technical abilities, the Buenos Aires-born attacker is a very good candidate to take up the job offer from Liverpool.
Coutinho’s departure has been beckoning for some time now, ever since Barcelona raised heavy interest in the Brazilian last summer. The entire transfer saga circulated over the player wanting to leave but the club reluctant to let him go.
Liverpool who is currently in the fourth spot of the Premier League might just out of the title challenge already with Manchester City breaking away with a 15 point lead at the top of the table. Otherwise, their European campaign is still alive with strong chances of winning at least one of the domestic trophies.
Klopp’s defensive problems were answered by breaking the transfer record for a defender when the club signed Virgil van Dijk for £75m. Obviously, the Dutchman’s services were highly necessary going forward, but this did not mean that you needed to weaken the attacking lineup.
Liverpool tried and competed against the likes of the Catalan giants to hold onto Coutinho but in the end, could not keep him at the club.
Gomez although a highly experienced player is on the wrong side of his 20s and is highly regarded among the La Dea fans. The Italian side might only accept an astronomical bid which might not be met by Liverpool.
