Derby County consider making a move for Millwall striker Lee Gregory. According to recent reports in the English media, the Rams are interested in the 29-year-old and are weighing up an offer for him this month. It is being reported by a number of sources that East Midlands are considering making an offer in the region of £500,000 for the Millwall striker. Despite Derby having put pen to paper on a deal with Cameron Jerome from Norwich City earlier in this window, recent sources suggest Gary Rowett would like to bring in another striker before the transfer window comes to a close at the end of this month.
Darren Bent, whose contract runs out at the end of the current campaign, has departed the club to make a switch to Burton Albion on loan, while Chris Martin also looks like he could part ways with the club soon. This would still leave the likes of David Nugent, Sam Winnall, Matej Vydra and Cameron Jerome as the plethora of attacking options at the club.
Gregory came off the bench as a second-half substitute for Millwall in their 2-2 draw versus Rochdale during the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday. The forward, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season, has found the back of the net five times so far this term. He is in line to lace up against the Rams on Tuesday night – when the two teams clash heads in the Championship at the Den.
Derby County are currently occupying second place in the English Championship table and are well on course to secure an automatic promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season. However, they are just two points above Cardiff City and could do with some added firepower in front of goal. Gregory has featured in 27 matches for Millwall this season, scoring 5 goals and making 2 assists in all competitions.
The potential addition of the veteran English striker could go a long way in giving their attack a big boost going into the second half of their campaign. Although, he is not as prolific in the Championship, yet with better quality at Pride Park, it is expected that he will score more goals for the Rams if given the opportunity to join the East Midlands club in the near future. He has already proven his worth in the second tier of English football so it would be a low-risk investment.
Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Gregory and whether he ends up joining Derby County in the near future.
