Borussia Dortmund have joined the race to sign Liverpool’s contract rebel Emre Can, as per reports from English newspaper, Daily Mirror. The Black and Yellows, however, will face stiff competition from Juventus and Manchester City for Emre Can, whose contract with Liverpool expires at the end of this season.
It’s highly unlikely that the Merseyside giants will offer Can and his agent, the release clause they are asking for, meaning the German International might be available for free next summer.
It will be huge for Borussia Dortmund if they can somehow manage to secure the services of this highly rated German midfielder. The Black and Yellows, despite an impressive start to the season, have stuttered in both Bundesliga and Champions League this season, failing to win a single game from any of those competitions last month.
Lack of incision through the midfield has been one of the primary issues for die Schwarzgelben. Even though Nuri Sahin had started the season really well, the Turkish International has struggled a lot against high-octane oppositions. While Julian Weigl has been completely out of sorts this season, having been decelerated by Thiago Alcantara, in the recent Klassiker last week.
Since the departure of Ilkay Gundogan, Dortmund are clearly lacking some freedom in the central areas of the pitch. While Mario Gotze has stepped up his game to the next level, after coming back from a long layoff, the other midfielders have failed to show the same kind of tenacity this season.
Peter Bosz’s men lack the presence of a proper holding midfielder in their team at the moment and that’s what makes Emre Can a perfect fit for the Ruhr giants. The 23-year-old offers a physical presence in the middle of the park, which will eventually help the likes of Mario Gotze, Gonzalo Castro or Mahmoud Dahoud to stamp their authority without having to worry much defensively.
Although Nuri Sahin is a seasoned professional while Julian Weigl has been really impressive playing as the holding midfielder for the past couple of seasons, both midfielders lack some physical prowess in their overall gameplay, which makes it easier for opponents to completely neglect the presence of a holding midfielder.
Emre Can will be a perfect fit for Peter Bosz’s men, who seeks to improve his team’s performances by bringing more stability into the middle of the pitch and instilling a proper holding midfielder in the shape of Can. The signing of the Liverpool ace might be the first step forward in the right direction for the Dutch mastermind.
