Vincent Kompany will be a wanted man this summer – with a host of clubs like Everton and West Ham linked with a move for him this summer. The 31-year-old Belgian international defender will be focused to finish Manchester City’s season strongly before thinking about any interest from other clubs.
Kompany is fit and back in the starting lineup again after a nightmare two-year injury spell which has restricted his City appearances to just seven since the end of last season. Pep Guardiola restored Kompany to City’s struggling defence in the 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on April 5th – his first league game since a win at Crystal Palace in mid-November.
And although the Spanish manager recognises the experienced centre-back could play a crucial part next season, suspicions remain about Kompany’s injury history and his fitness as well with the player now above 30. After a solid display at Chelsea, the City captain had a slight issue thus causing him to miss the win over Hull but he was back for and scored in Saturday’s 3-0 win away to Southampton.
Kompany’s injury issues haven’t deterred other Premier League clubs with West Ham among several teams keeping a close watch on his fitness progress. The two-time Premier League winner Kompany is a force to reckon when he is on the pitch.
The 31-year-old has struggled a lot in the past to overcome a succession of injury problems, meaning he has been limited to only four starts in the Premier League so far this season. The influence Kompany has at the back makes City such a better side. The veteran is so focused and aggressive in his defensive play, dominating one-on-one battles. As a leader, he is the best out there and very few are better than him in the English game. While the manager is seeking to build a team full of young talent, Kompany is a player having experience and authority with him.
West ham had their fair share of problem with their defence as well and have conceded too many easy goals which have a significant effect on their league position in the Premier League. Slaven Bilic will be hoping to add the experienced centre-back to his squad and add some solidity to the Hammer’s backline. Manchester City remains in the hunt for a top-four finish and are also in the semi-final of the FA Cup against Arsenal next weekend. A full-strength skipper is what City would need at this moment.
