On the same day he was named the best paid footballer in the world, Barcelona striker Lionel Messi netted another hat-trick to break the club’s long-standing goal-scoring record.
I’ve sat down and trawled through endless video footage and couldn’t decide , so I have decided to post a video showing all of his record-breaking 234 goals for Barcelona.
Messi, 24, struck his latest treble in Tuesday night’s 5-3 Primera Division win over with Granada at the Nou Camp, equalling the 232 goals set by Cesar Rodriguez in the 1940s and 1950s when he slotted home in the 17th minute, before lobbing goalkeeper Julio Cesar to secure the record outright. His third arrived four minutes from time. His record target was revised down to 232 from 235 after a newspaper study.
“We are witnessing the best [player] in every sense,” Barcelona manager Guardiola said at his post-match press conference.
“He does everything, and he does it every three days. I’m sorry for those that want to sit on his throne, but this lad is the best.
“Hopefully we can enjoy his football for many more years.”
Messi, a three-time FIFA World Player of the Year, has scored 48 goals in 40 games for the Catalan giants this season. His medal collection — both team and individual — is astonishing and includes five La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues – and he still only 24 !
So check out the video below and check out goal Number 1…where he collects the ball from the half-way line before weaving his way through a static defence, rounding the goal-keeper and stroking the ball into the net with his right-foot…remind you of another goal of similar quality scored by another diminutive Argentinian wearing the No.10 shirt ?
